The deputy or substitute of a rector in a university, college, or other educational institution; a vice-rector.
Formerly in use in the Scottish universities; also in those of Germany, in some of which the king or prince of the state was formerly the nominal Rector (rector 4 c), and the professor who executed the duties of the office was pro-rector. (Cf. the positions of Chancellor and Vice-chancellor at Oxford, Cambridge, and Dublin.) Also in some other German institutes of higher education.
